Having grown up playing the various mech combat games, I was excited to see that FASA Interactive and MicroProse had gotten together to add a new twist to the old genre of piloting giant robotic warriors, or mechs, into battle. What they have created is an excellent addition to any mech fan’s collection, though it does stray rather far from the original pen and paper game. The first thing players will notice is the incredible introduction. Through the use of live actors interspersed with computer drawn sequences, the mood is quickly set and the premise of the game explained. The … Continue reading MechCommander will fry competition
This month was the start of the 79th year of the National Football League, and as any other red-blooded sports lover, I am ready for it. But these days, not only do I watch the televised games, but I also simulate them on my PC or my Sony PlayStation. And just in time for the start of the real NFL season, it’s also time for the start of the PlayStation NFL war, with two main competitors going at it. On one side we have the 1999 update of the long-running Madden Series by EA Sports, and on the other end … Continue reading It’s kickoff for this year’s football wars
I am a major X-Files fan, so when I found out that Fox Interactive was putting out an X-Files Game, I knew I had to have it. After a heated bidding war with the other GiN reviewers, I managed to convince the editor in chief that I was the best man for the job. Now I just have to wash his car once a week for the rest of the month. Fortunately for me, this game is worth it. Once I finally laid my hands on the box, I was a little horrified to find seven CD’s inside. I had … Continue reading X-Files Fans: stop drooling and buy it!

To win Captain Claw, a player must be a god–or at least play like one. This scrolling adventure game long descended from Pitfall, follows the journey of a ship-commander cat and his attempts to piece together a map and find the Jewels of Nine Lives. From Monolith Studios, the game spins off a DVD-ROM. But only between the game action does Captain Claw take true benefit of the digital versatile disk technology. As the adventure proceeds and the fierce feline works his way through levels, the story unfold in Saturday-morning-cartoon-quality bits. Unfortunately, on first installation, the cartoons were without audio … Continue reading Monolith’s Captain Claw DVD game not quite perrrrfect
Upon re-reading my first review of this game, I realized that it was not simply a review, but there was also an editorial on where this part of the industry was headed. It was all muddled together, and came off as a luke warm review of the game. This is not what I intended, so I went through, sifted out the two sets of opinions, and separated them, so people can understand just what it is I am talking about (a rare privilege – savor it, people). Ready? Hang on. Sanctum by Digital Addiction is a collectable card game that … Continue reading Okay, let’s try this again…
After I played Unreal for the first time, I took a step back in time and loaded up my old copy of Wolfenstein 3D, from iD, just to remind myself of the changes that have taken place over the last five or six years. And I was impressed. Their have been so many great changes since I started playing this type of game back in college that I don’t even know where to begin. Right off the bat I noticed that this game, unlike almost all its predecessors, has a real plot. Sure Wolfenstein 3d had a plot, kill everything, … Continue reading From Wolfenstein 3D to Quake and now -Wow. It’s Unreal.
To anyone who has read my past reviews, it can easily be found that I am a die hard Wing Commander addict. I just feel that no other game series provided me with such excitement (and yes, many wrist injuries from breaking in so many flightsticks), and always gave me that urge to do "just one more mission." And other the other hand, I’ve never truly been a big fan of the Descent series. I don’t know why it is, but just the claustrophobic feeling of flying through those tight corridors just didn’t please me much. And when I heard … Continue reading Freespace: a welcome alternative to cramped tunnel fighting
Broderbund’s "Carmen Sandiego: World Detective" is quite a package. It not only involves the player in detective work trying to track down Carmen Sandiego and her criminal pals through 50 countries all over the globe, but it also can lead the player to more scholastically-oriented treasures by using the package’s multimedia library, direct Internet access to a Web site with links to geographical information, a talking foreign language glossary and guided tours of the lands that you as a detective are visiting. Carmen Sandiego and her globe trotting criminal ilk known as V.I.L.E. (Villains International League of Evil) commit crimes … Continue reading Carmen Sandiego grows up, adds new educational features
Talon Soft’s Tribal Rage (http://www.talonsoft.com) is the next new real time strategy game. This one takes place in post-apocalyptic 2030, where 6 tribes fight for control. They are the Enforcers, Bikers, Amazons, Cyborgs, Death Cultists and Trailer Trash. Each tribe has their own unique advantages and disadvantages. The characteristics of each tribe are what contribute to the game’s overall charm. To wit: Enforcer tribes are the only law enforcement in post-apocalyptic America. They are really just mercenaries for hire who wield some very sophisticated weapons including Laser pistols and disintegrator rifles. Some of their advantages are an almost invincible, short … Continue reading Detailed military strategy skills to war game of pure fun
