Free League Announces Lord of The Rings RPG Expansion for October 25

Back in September, we reported that Free League Publishing was busy working on a Lord of the Rings Roleplaying game which, for the first time, would conform to the fifth edition Dungeons and Dragons ruleset which is used by a majority of those who play pen and paper roleplaying games these days, even if the new game was not an official Wizards of the Coast property, which owns the rights to D&D.

It all sounded wonderful, but we didn’t know if it would take years before we would see some new content for the Lord of the Rings game. Now, however, it seems like the wait will not be very long. Free League just announced that a new physical game would be available on October 25. And, those who pre-order the physical set can immediately download PDFs so they can start playing right away.

It’s no wonder that so many people are excited about this. Author J.R.R. Tolkien is probably more popular today than he was when his books started to publish back in 1937. There is the television series on Amazon called The Rings of Power, online role playing games, a LEGO Lord of the Rings title, and even online casinos like the WAGMI Online Crypto Casino which offers high fantasy-themed slots that perfectly fit the Lord of the Rings flavor.

And now, it looks like we are getting a new Lord of the Rings pen and paper RPG. According to Free League Publishing, the Ruins of the Lost Realm, the first expansion for the award-winning second edition of The One Ring RPG based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, will be released October 25. The pre-order was launched today and gives immediate access to complete PDFs.

According to Free League, they describe the new role-playing game like this:

In the Westlands of Eriador, between the Misty Mountains and the Mountains of Lune, the Hobbits found both Men and Elves. Indeed, a remnant still dwelt there of the Dúnedain, the kings of Men that came over the Sea out of Westernesse; but they were dwindling fast and the lands of their North Kingdom were falling far and wide into waste. A region often described as deserted becomes a crucible for adventure.

Ruins of the Lost Realm is a beautifully illustrated 120-page hardcover volume. It contains several chapters including:

Chapter 1: Fog Over Eriador offers a description of the regions that once were part of the kingdom of Arnor, with a focus on the city of Tharbad.

Chapter 2: A Gathering Storm provides the Loremaster with a set of narrative elements aimed at building a possible future for the land of Eriador as a whole, including the description of many looming threats, Loremaster characters and their agendas.

Chapter 3: Landmarks adds twelve sites of interest in the style of the one presented in the core volume. These locations depict both ‘historical’ sites mentioned in The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, and others that have been created specifically for the game.

The One Ring roleplaying game is based on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, two extraordinary works of fiction by the beloved author and respected academic, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. With these books, Tolkien introduced readers to his greatest creation, the world of Middle-earth, a mythic land from a remote past.

With The One Ring, Middle-earth is yours to explore. You will travel the land searching for clues about the return of the Shadow, and have the chance to play a part in the struggle against the Enemy.
