Hey all, I’m back with a true classic film from 1962 for this week’s Movie Monday that I recently watched again. It’s Lawrence of Arabia.
Plot: The plot of the film is a more fantastical recounting of T.E. Lawrence’s autobiography “Seven Pillars of Wisdom” and is pretty amazing. Honestly, it’s widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time and for good reason. It is also incredibly lengthy, clocking in at a whopping 222 minutes long. It details Lawrence’s life during World War I and the things he did surrounding that. I won’t go into much more, but it was an amazing story. That should come as no surprise as it’s inspired countless authors and filmmakers from George Lucas to Frank Herbert.
Casting: The cast is pretty amazing with Peter O’Toole playing the star role of Lawrence, while the rest of the cast was just as great.
Cinematography: The film was before Star Wars obviously, so the special effects weren’t the greatest, but it was amazing for the time. Amusingly, when the actual film was being restored for scanning into 8k resolution, it was already so high resolution that it showed the tiny lines that the film had developed due to being shot in the heat of the desert.
Music: I could go on and on, but really, I think I’ve proven my point about how transformational the film was and still is today. The music is no exception to this.
Overall: A must-see film, though do be aware it’s nearly four hours long, so be prepared for that.
For those who like: Epics, Historical, Mostly Accurate to History, Military, Politics, Amazing Cast of Characters, and Incredible Cinematography.
Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above, but I’d recommend giving this a shot given its universal acclaim.
