Darkstone is Diablo’s Happier Twin

So I wanted to play Darkstone again to reacquaint myself with the game after all the time I’ve spent on Ever Quest lately. Sure, spend maybe an hour or two romping through the dungeons, busting a few monster heads and generally remembering all the ins and outs. Problem: those couple of hours turned into a couple of days and I thought to myself, "Hey…didn’t I have a review to write?" Aw, nuts… I remember back when I first started playing Darkstone that I was slightly disappointed. "Great," I thought, "a Diablo clone." Sure, Darkstone plays a helluva lot like Diablo, … Continue reading Darkstone is Diablo’s Happier Twin

Hot Wheels Turbo Racing zooms to your heart

The worst mistake a gamer could make is to dismiss this game as just for kids and take a pass on it. While the game holds all the standard fare for a racing game, the nostaglia involved in playing, not to mention the pure fun you have makes this offering from Stormfront Studios (published by EA) one of the best games in the racing genre. Let’s face facts — we all played with Hot Wheels cars growing up. We had the funny cars, the buggys, and of course the Scooby Doo lookin’ Mystery Machine van. One of the best parts … Continue reading Hot Wheels Turbo Racing zooms to your heart

WWF Attitude is a wrestling fans dream

WWF Attitude, simply put, lays the smackdown on all other roody-poo candy-ass wrestling games out on the market. The other pretender wrestling games, have no chance in hell in standing up to this game, and that’s the bottom line because Ken Urben said so and I’m one bad Mamma Jamma. If you understood all of the WWF wrestling references in the preceding paragraph, you’ll absolutely adore WWF Attitude. If you were left scratching your head in bewilderment, you’ll find yourself with an average game that you should think twice about buying. I’ll admit right off the bat something that my … Continue reading WWF Attitude is a wrestling fans dream

Evil Zone suffers from been there

I must start out this review by immediately making it clear that I’m not the biggest fan of fighting games in general. Now, some good ones have come along, like Tekken 3 and Marvel Super Heroes, but for the most part, it is very difficult to do anything in a fighting game that hasn’t been done before. While there is some freshness to it, the inevitable fact above is what Evil Zone primarily suffers from.

First off, let’s start off with the name — Evil Zone. What?!? What kind of name is that? Who got paid to come up … Continue reading Evil Zone suffers from been there

Populous: The Beginning is a devine rebirth

A standard refrain in any industry is that "everything old is new again." Old movies get remade, old songs get covered by new bands, and old cars always have a chance at a comeback. This year a classic was re-released. Still using the same familiar lines as the old model, the new version is peppier, cooler looking, has bright new colors, and lots of little extras. No, I’m not talking about the new Volkswagen Beetle, I’m talking about Populous: The Beginning. Oh, the hours I used to waste playing the original of this game! Back before StarCraft, Civilization, and Alpha-Centauri … Continue reading Populous: The Beginning is a devine rebirth

Amerzone usurps the ultimate adventure game

Too often, adventure games compare themselves to the reigning God, Myst. And too often, new games perform far below Myst — far worse in fact. Some might be inclined to declare Amerzone a good game in the Myst vein. I’ll go one step further. Amerzone takes first-person adventure gaming to the next level and could — no, Amerzone should — become Myst’s successor on the throne of adventure games. Amerzone’s captivating graphics, compelling characters, complex, but solvable, puzzles and an excellent plot kept me playing for hours on end–nothing that any other adventure game has done since…well…Myst. (Sorry fans, but … Continue reading Amerzone usurps the ultimate adventure game

Final Fantasy VIII is good, but not great

I so wanted Final Fantasy VIII to be the be-all-end-all of gaming experiences. I so wanted to be able to say that this was the greastest game I’ve ever played. Unfortunately, after all the hype, all the hope, and almost 60 hours of playing and completing Square’s latest offering in the signature series of RPG’s, I’m almost heartbroken to say that the game doesn’t bring home the goods. To be fair, I, much like the rest of the gaming world, had enormous expectations. I half expected the characters in the game to jump out of my television and finish doing … Continue reading Final Fantasy VIII is good, but not great

Bottom of the 9th ’99 is a swing and a miss

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. This is your favorite sports announcer live from the GiN ballpark in Virginia, and man what a game that has been played here thus far today. It’s the final inning, two outs and no runners on. Konami desperately needs to get on base and bring some runners home if they’re gonna pull this one out. However, the Game Industry News team has played a tough nine innings and are determined to give the fans what they’ve been wanting all along. Nothing but the best baseball game this year. Let’s get back to the action as … Continue reading Bottom of the 9th ’99 is a swing and a miss

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete is a reality panic button

Back in 1993, a game was released on the Sega CD system that was the rage of all RPGers everywhere. It was hailed for its characters, story and gameplay. Unfortunately for myself, Nintendo had successfully indoctrinated me to despise all things Sega and I never got to play the game known as Lunar: The Silver Star. Now, thanks to the wonder that is PlayStation, I can see what was behind the hype oh so many years ago. The first thing you’ll notice about the game is obvious when you buy it. The packaging is the biggest I’ve ever seen. Four … Continue reading Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete is a reality panic button

Boss Rally should have never left the N64

I don’t understand why it seems that every N64 game is being translated over to the PC. While some I have seen some turn out to be pretty good [Turok 2 and Rogue Squadron] there are also those that turn out to be very bad. Two years ago, there was a little known racer for the Nintendo 64 called Top Gear Rally. Back then I considered it to be pretty average, and now in 1999, its PC sibling, now titled Boss Rally, is just as average. First of all, you will notice that the graphics are almost identical to that … Continue reading Boss Rally should have never left the N64
