New independent developer Crow Cottage has released its debut game, How Empires Work, an incremental grand strategy title that challenges players to build and manage an empire spanning centuries of history. The game launched Nov. 3 on Steam, with a free demo also available for players who want to try it first.
Crow Cottage is a four-person development team with members based in Europe and China. Although the developers have previous experience working on contract projects, How Empires Work marks the studio’s first independent release.
The game combines traditional grand strategy concepts with incremental gameplay, beginning with the simple click of a button. As players develop their small lordship into a growing nation, they gradually unlock new systems for taxation, trade, labor, military expansion and political control.
One of the game’s central mechanics involves turning repetitive tasks into automated institutions. Instead of personally managing every aspect of an expanding state, players can establish bureaucracies and employ aristocrats to oversee increasingly complicated systems of government. As those institutions grow, they begin operating on their own, allowing players to concentrate on larger strategic decisions.
The world also evolves as an empire expands, requiring players to adapt their strategies to changing economic and political conditions. Players can explore new regions, build roads, manage provinces and extend their influence through diplomacy or military conquest.
How Empires Work features a hand-painted world map where trade networks, armies and economic activity help illustrate the development of an expanding empire. Players must balance growth with internal challenges and rival powers while building the institutions needed to maintain control over increasingly distant territories.
The game also embraces a humorous tone, with players serving at the pleasure of Her Imperial Majesty, who expects the empire to prosper under their leadership. Naturally, collecting taxes and ensuring the cooperation of neighboring powers are among the responsibilities that come with the position.
How Empires Work is available now on Steam for PC. A free demo remains available for players interested in trying the game’s blend of incremental progression, economic management and grand strategy before committing to imperial service.
