Hey all, I’m back with a look at a specific type of tech for this week’s Video Game Tuesday. It’s all about the Nemesis System.

What is the Nemesis System?: It is a rather brilliant system used in Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel Shadow of War, where enemies can remember a player and their actions. For example, maybe you used bees to distract said enemy once and now that’s it returned to fight you again, it has gained a weakness or resistance to said tactic forever onwards.

It was innovative and absolutely worth other games copying it, and sadly it’s now locked away until 2036 behind a patent and is unlikely to ever be used since Monolith Productions was closed earlier this year by Warner Brothers. It is a true pity because I could see such a system being useful in pretty much any open world title, for example Hogwarts Legacy 2, which as of this writing still hasn’t been officially announced, but it’s rumored to exist by some highly reputable industry veterans like Jason Schreier.

What other games could use a Nemesis System?: Honestly, I’ve always dreamed of a Mistborn title set in author Brandon Sanderson’s world. And it would be awesome if it had a Nemesis System like Shadow of Mordor, which would absolutely be a great fit for the system. It’s incredibly unlikely it’ll ever happen, which I think is a shame.

That’s it for this week’s Video Game Tuesday.
