Hey all, this week for Retro Game Friday I’m back with a 2D platformer game that took its inspiration from Sonic the Hedgehog. It’s Bubsy.

Plot: The plot is fairly mediocre. Bubsy has the largest collection of yarn, and aliens are invading to steal Earth’s yarn. So, he goes out to stop them and recover the yarn they are stealing. Honestly the plot is fairly standard. Not that amazing.

Gameplay: This played like any other 2D platformer, though it played a lot like Sonic, which was definitely intentional. Unfortunately, it was not as good as Sonic. The physics were wonky, and the speed was not nearly as controllable. Bubsy has been called a pale imitation of Sonic by others, and I have to stand by that assessment. It was okay when I played it at a friend’s house, but I would have preferred to have been playing Sonic over at another of my friends if I had to choose between it and Bubsy.

Art: The art was good though, and since it’s all in 2D it has aged pretty well since then.

Music: The music is highly forgettable, as in I remember almost nothing about it other than it being upbeat and fitting the game.

Overall: A decent platformer, but nothing on the level of Sonic or Mario.

For those who like: Platformers and Great Artwork.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
