Hey all, I’m back with an edutainment game from 1994 for this week’s Retro Game Friday. It’s Around the World in 80 Days.

Plot: The game’s based on the classic Jules Verne novel of the same name where you have to journey all the way around the world in just 80 days, which at its time period was almost impossible. Honestly, the story is pretty mild. However, because I could play the entire thing during a single recess period when I was a kid, it was perfect. It was an MS-DOS game from 1994 that was published by EA Kids.

Gameplay: Around the World in 80 Days is part of a subgenre called an “interactive storybook” and frankly doesn’t have much gameplay. It’s mostly a point and click adventure with some simple puzzles designed to help kids learn basic facts about the world.

Art: The graphics have actually aged fairly well given the age of this game, though that’s probably due to the art style being so cartoonish.

Music: The music was okay given that it was not the focus of Around the World in 80 Days.

Overall: This was one of the better edutainment games.

For those who like: Edutainment games, classic PC titles, point and click adventures, and interactive storybooks.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
