Chris Richards, GiN Staff

Chris started playing video games back in the early 80's on an Atari 2600. His first PC was a Tandy 1000 (circa 1985) from Radio Shack and his first game was a little adventure game called Rogue. He is still addicted to it. And its all been down hill from there. He blew the dust off of his old 360K 5 1/4 floppies to provide you with a little bit of Game Industry History. Download a copy of Rogue compliments of the GiN staff.

The Economic Side of Warcraft

I would have titled this game Merchants and Knights instead of Knights and Merchants. You can spend 3 or 4 hours building up your town, interspersed with maybe 5 or 10 minutes of combat. Now don’t take that the wrong way. I just have some issues with what is truly a fun game. If I could divide this game in two, I would give the Merchants side 4 ½ GiN gems, but unfortunately I would have to give the Knights part of this game 2 GiN gems. Average that out and Knights and Merchants gets 3 ½ GiN gems. The … Continue reading The Economic Side of Warcraft

Hexplore Your World

Welcome to the more personal side of Online Role playing. When I first received Hexplore, I played the first level by myself in the single player mode and I had a really good time. I fought monsters and recruited an archer and a warrior to go with my adventurer character. I explored a town and purchased a better axe for my warrior, and I learned a lot about how the interface works. Overall, it was a very helpful experience. Unfortunately, that is also about the extent of the usefulness of the single player version. The multi player version, which I … Continue reading Hexplore Your World

X-Files Fans: stop drooling and buy it!

I am a major X-Files fan, so when I found out that Fox Interactive was putting out an X-Files Game, I knew I had to have it. After a heated bidding war with the other GiN reviewers, I managed to convince the editor in chief that I was the best man for the job. Now I just have to wash his car once a week for the rest of the month. Fortunately for me, this game is worth it. Once I finally laid my hands on the box, I was a little horrified to find seven CD’s inside. I had … Continue reading X-Files Fans: stop drooling and buy it!

From Wolfenstein 3D to Quake and now -Wow. It’s Unreal.

After I played Unreal for the first time, I took a step back in time and loaded up my old copy of Wolfenstein 3D, from iD, just to remind myself of the changes that have taken place over the last five or six years. And I was impressed. Their have been so many great changes since I started playing this type of game back in college that I don’t even know where to begin. Right off the bat I noticed that this game, unlike almost all its predecessors, has a real plot. Sure Wolfenstein 3d had a plot, kill everything, … Continue reading From Wolfenstein 3D to Quake and now -Wow. It’s Unreal.

Detailed military strategy skills to war game of pure fun

Talon Soft’s Tribal Rage (http://www.talonsoft.com) is the next new real time strategy game. This one takes place in post-apocalyptic 2030, where 6 tribes fight for control. They are the Enforcers, Bikers, Amazons, Cyborgs, Death Cultists and Trailer Trash. Each tribe has their own unique advantages and disadvantages. The characteristics of each tribe are what contribute to the game’s overall charm. To wit: Enforcer tribes are the only law enforcement in post-apocalyptic America. They are really just mercenaries for hire who wield some very sophisticated weapons including Laser pistols and disintegrator rifles. Some of their advantages are an almost invincible, short … Continue reading Detailed military strategy skills to war game of pure fun
