Welcome Time Wasters!

This week I spent my time with a neat little game called Spider: Downloaded. It’s a browser game. I haven’t played anything in my browser for awhile and figured it was time to.

Spider: Downloaded is a platforming game that put players in control of a spider that has been downloaded into a virtual world by an evil computer. The spider has to jump and swing through various levels and fight off bosses to earn his freedom from this prison.

That’s a little too close for comfort.

The controls in Spider: Downloaded are simple and easy  to learn. The Spider is controlled with either the WASD keys or the arrow keys. Our little friend also has a web that can be shot out at walls and enemies and will swing him around. Aiming and shooting this web is set to the mouse. He can also cling to and walk on walls.

There’s are large variety of levels to play in Spider: Downloaded and they continue to get harder as the game progresses. Some levels will require players to over through them as fast as possible in order to avoid death. However, there are others where it’s a much better idea to look around a bit first and plan what to do. This makes for a game that is fun and challenging without getting stale.

There are also keys that can be picked up in levels. Sometimes these keys can be hard to reach and will require the player to go out of their way. They allow players to skip a level if it happens to be giving them a tough time. It’s not something I ever used, but the option is nice for players that are getting frustrated by a particular level.

Bosses appear at the end of each world. They’re a unique challenge that requires players to use their learned abilities to move forward. For example, the first boss is a Wolf Spider (We have these in Ohio. They get way too big for me.). It has a simple attack pattern of jumping at the player when they get close to it. This battle takes pace on a platform with damaging floors on each side. I lead the enemy spider to the edge and the jumped off when it went for me. While still in the air, I launched a web at it and used my momentum, to pull it off the edge. I then threw myself back to the platform without getting hurt by slingshoting myself off the Wolf Spider’s body.

It’s like Mission Impossible.

The graphics and audio in Spider: Downloaded are good, but they aren’t going to blow the player away. Both have a techno feel to them that fits with the computer world setting. It’s also obvious what’s dangerous and what isn’t based on colors used consistently in the game.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with Spider: Downloaded. It’s a fun little game that challenges players to use their mind and reflexes to the best of their abilities. It’s also free and is easy to control. It’s worth putting some time into between classes or during a lunch break. Even if you don’t play it all the way through.
