Why Some CS2 Skins Are Much Rarer Than Others

Some CS2 skins are easy to find, while others are much less common on the market. The difference starts with the game’s rarity system, but it doesn’t end there. Certain versions can be considerably rarer than others due to the chance to obtain a certain skin, the number of cases or collection items in circulation at the time, and characteristics such as float, pattern, StatTrak or Souvenir status.

Skin Rarity Grades

CS2 uses rarity grades to separate skins into different tiers. These include Consumer Grade, Industrial Grade, Mil-Spec, Restricted, Classified, and Covert. Rare special items such as knives and gloves are generally shown as Extraordinary. The M4A4 | Howl is the only Contraband weapon skin. Within a CS2 weapon case, higher-tier items have lower chances of appearing. A Covert skin is therefore harder to obtain from the same case than a Restricted or Mil-Spec skin.

The grade alone, however, does not show how many copies of a skin exist. A skin from an older or limited collection may have a lower grade but fewer existing copies than a Covert skin from a widely available case.

Case Skins and Their Odds

Weapon cases use weighted rarity tiers rather than giving every included skin an equal chance. Published probabilities commonly used for CS2 case odds put Mil-Spec items at about 79.92%, Restricted at 15.98%, Classified at 3.20%, and Covert at 0.64%. The chance of receiving a rare special item is about 0.26%. The number of CS2 skins within a tier matters as well. If a case contains two Covert finishes, that tier’s probability is divided between them.

These figures explain why high-tier case skins enter circulation much more slowly than lower-tier ones. They do not, however, apply to every type of CS2 item or collection.

The Supply of the Case or Collection

A CS2 skin cannot keep entering circulation if its source is no longer readily available. This is why the history of a case or collection matters when discussing rarity. Cases that are regularly distributed can continue adding skins to the overall supply. Older cases may become much less common, making new examples of their contents slower to enter inventories. Existing CS2 cases and skins do not disappear, but fewer new copies may become available over time.

Some collections were also connected to operations or other limited distribution periods. Once that method of distribution ends, the supply behaves differently from that of skins found in cases that continue to circulate. As a result, two skins with the same rarity grade can have very different supply levels.

Float Value

Every individual CS2 skin has a float value that determines its wear within the range allowed for that finish. Exterior categories such as Factory New, Minimal Wear, and Field-Tested cover sections of the float scale rather than one exact value. Some finishes have broad float ranges, while others are restricted to a smaller part of the scale. Individual examples very close to the lowest or highest possible float can be considerably harder to find. This does not change the official rarity grade. A Restricted skin remains Restricted regardless of its float. Instead, the particular copy becomes unusual compared with other examples of the same finish.

Rare Patterns

A pattern seed creates another type of rarity. On certain finishes, the pattern changes how colors or design elements are positioned across the weapon. Case Hardened is a well-known example. Different seeds produce different distributions of blue, gold, and other tones. Some configurations with unusually large amounts of blue are commonly described by traders and collectors as Blue Gems.

Pattern differences also matter for certain Fade, Doppler, and other finishes, although the effect varies between skins. A pattern that matters greatly on one finish may have little practical significance on another.

StatTrak and Souvenir Skins

Some CS2 case skins can appear as StatTrak versions. These include a counter that records kills made with the weapon. StatTrak items form a separate portion of the skins coming from eligible cases, making them less common than ordinary versions of the same finish. Souvenir skins have a different origin. They come from Souvenir packages associated with Counter-Strike tournaments and map collections and carry tournament-related stickers. StatTrak and Souvenir should not be treated as two names for the same type of special skin. Their distribution systems are different, and Souvenir weapon skins do not come from ordinary weapon cases.

Final Thoughts

The rarity grade of CS2 skins gives a useful starting point, but actual scarcity goes further. A skin’s source determines how many copies can enter circulation, while float, pattern, StatTrak, and Souvenir properties can make individual versions harder to find. Two CS2 skins with the same official grade can therefore have very different levels of real-world availability.
