After 6.5 years of development, Hologryph has officially launched SAND: Raiders of Sophie into Early Access on Steam. The team described the journey as an especially difficult one, shaped not only by the technical challenge of building a game around a movable player base, but also by the realities of developing through both a global pandemic and wartime conditions.
According to the developers, the original idea behind SAND was simple: “What if you could move your base?” That concept eventually evolved into a unique blend of survival, extraction, battle royale, base building and exploration set on the dunes of Sophie. Players can build and customize a walking mech fortress known as a Trampler, then head into a harsh alternate-1910 desert either solo or with a squad to scavenge loot, gather weapons and artifacts and battle rival players.
The Early Access version of SAND: Raiders of Sophie on Steam currently offers two game modes. Voyage is designed as a more open and relaxed experience, while Storm Dive focuses more heavily on PvP action and higher-tier rewards as an encroaching sand storm pushes players together. Hologryph also thanked its Discord community, saying player feedback and participation in multiple open and closed playtests were instrumental in helping the game reach launch.
Looking ahead, the developers say they plan to continue building SAND in the open alongside the community as they work toward version 1.0 and eventual console releases. The team also said players should stay tuned for more news on the game’s Early Access roadmap.
