Hey all, I’m back with a new series for this week’s Translation Necessary Thursday. It’s “Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon Volume One” by Meikyou Shisui.

Plot: The plot of this story is, well, very apparent given the title, which is yet another really long name. The full name of this series is “My Gift Lvl 9999 Unlimited Gacha: Backstabbed in a Backwater Dungeon, I’m Out for Revenge.” Honestly, the length of the names of these light novels are becoming more than a bit ridiculous.

Anyway, this story involves a kid named Light who is recruited into a party of adventurers made up of every other race in the world ostensibly to fight against discrimination, and he was recruited in particular for his skill at summoning unlimited cards full of useful things to support the rest of the party in dungeons. It obviously doesn’t go well, and things happen from there. Honestly, the plot is merely decent. It’s not terrible though.

Characters: There’s a fairly large group of characters introduced in this first volume, but it mostly revolves around Light and the allies he summons via his “unlimited gacha” like Mei the maid who has reached the level 9999, an utterly absurd level given that the races of the world generally have distinct levels that they can reach in their life with humans being the weakest and maybe reaching level 100 at most. The characters are plenty of fun though.

Overall: A rather darker fantasy story, although given the absurd nature of the main character and his allies it’s balanced by the fact that you know the main character will win for sure.
