Hey all, I’m back with a JRPG that’s from 1996 for this week’s Retro Game Friday. It’s Wild Arms.

Plot: The game’s plot took place in the fantasy world Filgaia. Honestly, the plot was fairly wild and really good. I won’t spoil it though. Despite being overshadowed by Final Fantasy 7 at the time, it definitely was a really great title.

Gameplay: The battles took place in 3D and were turn-based which fits given the era of the JRPG. Looking back, it’s not one of my favorite systems, though I did enjoy the rather different form of character progression and the unique forms of acquisition each character had to grow stronger.

Art: The graphics have aged fairly badly. But given this was one of the earliest 3D games on the PlayStation, that isn’t surprising. There was a remake released a few years later called Wild Arms: Alter Code F for the PlayStation 2 that was much better looking.

Music: The music for Wild Arms was appropriate for it. It was good but not a standout compared to other titles.

Overall: One of the better JRPGs of its time, Wild Arms has aged and not always for the better. Still, it’s a very fun JRPG for those who like Steampunk and Western styled titles.

For those who like: Steampunk, Westerns, JRPGs, Fantasy, Action, Adventure, and a Good Plot.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
