Hey all, I’m back with a western comedy film from 1979 for this week’s Movie Monday. It’s The Frisco Kid.
Plot: The plot of this film revolves around a rabbi named Avram who graduated from his Polish yeshiva and is then tasked with delivering a Torah scroll to a San Franscico synagogue. Being a forthright, righteous, and godly man, he has significant issues along the way and suffers for it.
There’s one particular sequence that has always remained in my head whenever I think about the movie, and it’s the Friday bank robbery. Because Friday at sunset is when Shabbat takes place and lasts until the sun sets once again on Saturday, the rabbi refuses to travel during that time. This made for a tricky situation because he was traveling with the bank robber named Tommy, and they were trying to run away from a posse while not being able to ride a horse for 24 hours.
Casting: The two leads are the late great Gene Wilder as Avram and Harrison Ford as the bank robber named Tommy. They very much steal the show, but that’s okay because the film is mostly about their journey together.
Cinematography: The special effects aren’t particularly noteworthy.
Music: The music is sadly pretty forgettable, and I don’t remember much of it though the part I do remember vividly, the aforementioned scene has a very suitable score that highlights the tension and suspense perfectly.
Overall: An awesome movie that stars the two great actors Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford.
For those who like: Comedies, Westerns, Historical Fiction, Amazing Plots, and a Great Cast of Characters.
Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
