Hey all, I’m back with a historical war movie from 1989 for this week’s Movie Monday. It’s Glory.

Plot: Glory is a historical war drama set during the American Civil War that follows the formation and service of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first official African American units in the U.S. Army.

The film focuses on Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, a young white officer tasked with leading the regiment, and the soldiers who faced harsh training, discrimination, and skepticism while proving their courage and commitment on the battlefield. Glory is best known for highlighting themes of duty, sacrifice, and earned respect, culminating in the regiment’s heroic assault on Fort Wagner, which helped change public perception of black soldiers in the war.

Casting: There were multiple stars cast in this film including Matthew Brodderick, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, and Morgan Freeman. The rest of the cast is great as well, but those four definitely highlight the movie.

Cinematography: The special effects are very well done. The battle scenes are a highlight of the film.

Music: The music is as dramatic as the fight scenes.

Overall: This is an awesome movie, and one that is frequently shown in classrooms as part of the curriculum. In fact, the first time I saw this film was when I was still in school.

For those who like: History, war dramas, good plots, an excellent cast, and amazing special effects.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
