I’m back with a rather new LitRPG series for this week’s Bookish Wednesday. It’s “Oathbound Healer,” Book 01 of the series Beneath the Dragoneye Moons by Selkie Myth.
Plot: This story starts out with the main character Elaine dying and being reborn in the fantastical world of Pallas, a world where a grand System governs everything with stuff like classes, skills, and magic all being part of it. Unfortunately for Elaine, it’s not an ideal world. In fact, it’s pretty hellish considering humans are very much lower on the food chain than many monsters, including various dinosaurs, and that the society is very much from what we’d call the classical era of Greece and Rome where women don’t have many rights at all.
The story is really good, and while there are parts, particularly in the beginning where Elaine very much acts her physical age with all the brashness of youth, that it’s not bad. About a third of the way through the book the story really starts to pick up after a certain event occurs.
Characters: Elaine is the main character, and I’m glad that we get to see her age up to the age of 14 by the middle of the book because seeing a character that you know is actually older acting like a stupid kid is more than a bit mildly aggravating. There are reasons for her acting like that because lots of her knowledge about the sciences is missing completely having been taken away by the god that helped resurrect her, except for one exception. Biology. The rest of the characters are good with Artemis being a standout character and one of my favorites.
Overall: A very solid first entry in a pretty solid LitRPG series. I’m personally going through the series right now, and I’m listening to book 9 as of my writing this post, so this is definitely getting my full approval and recommendation.
For those who like: Fantasy, LitRPGs, Action, Adventure, Drama, Reincarnation, Amazing Plots, and Awesome Characters.
Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
