hataraku

This week for Anime Sunday I’m covering a really hilarious series, it’s Hataraku Maou-Sama, or The Devil is a Part-Timer! if you are watching in English dubs (which is a pity as you lose lots of humor that way).

Plot Synopsis: The Maou (Demon King in Japanese) and one of his generals, Alciel, escape Ente Isla through a portal to modern Tokyo, Japan after being confronted by the Yuusha (Brave Hero in Japanese) Emilia Justina and her companions. However, due to the lack of magic in the modern contemporary world, both the Demon Lord and Alciel change into forms representing what they would look like if they were human. In order to survive, the Demon Lord takes a part-time job in a fast food restaurant named MgRonald while Alciel serves as his houseman, while they try to figure out a way back home.

Plot: It’s a comedy meets slice of life meets Fantasy. It’s pretty freaking hilarious and I love how Maou is one of the most powerful people from Ente Isla and he’s working at the in universe equivalent of McDonalds. The rest of the cast from Ente Isla is also demoted in funny ways, and Chiho the girl from Tokyo who works under Maou is pretty cute in her attempts to get him to like her.

Characters: Maou has been demoted to working at MgRonald, and like I said above the rest of the cast suffers the same fate. Emi works at a Tech Support call center, and Alciel is a housewife.

Art: The art is pretty great, it’s got plenty of character and doesn’t detract in anyway from the plot.

Music: The music is perfect for this series, it’s upbeat during the comedy parts and serious during the parts that require it.

Overall: If you want a good comedy, watch this.

For those who like: Fantasy, Comedy, Slice of Life, Deconstruction Series.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
