PlayStation Busted!

Before I start, I want to give a little piece of advice to any developers who claim that they will make the best experience ever for a game console: don't do it.

How many times have we seen this happen? Didn't John Romero threaten to make us his bitch back in ’97? And didn't he end up as our bitch when Daikatana fell way below expectations? Didn't George Broussard offer to make the ultimate first person shooter in Duke Nukem' Forever the moment the game is done? What happened there? Cancellation.

And now something similar is happening again. As many of you know, Ghostbusters was released across every possible console available. (Unless of course you're in Europe, which I will get to later.) In an interview with VG247, Terminal Reality's Mark Randel stated that "we're one of the few developers who love the PS3 and have a great time with it. We have great technology for the PS3 and we want to show it off."

Showing it off you say? Then why is it that the 360 version of Ghostbusters, which having some issues of its own in screen tearing and frame rate drops, looks significantly better than that of the PS3?

Now before all you trolls start sending me you hate mail, claiming that I am a 360 fanboy and that I am M$'s back pocket, I am not the one saying this. I admit I never played the PS3 version, just the 360 one, but screenshots coming from gaming website Lens of Truth show that the texture resolution of the PS3 version is far below that of the 360. In addition, some special effects such as shadows and sparking embers on scorched walls presented on 360 were nonexistent on the PS3 version.

It was also noted by Eurogamer that while the 360 version runs at a native 720p resolution, the PS3 version actually runs at 960×540. One has to wonder why the game would be released in such a poor state on the PS3. It brings back memories of first generation PS3 titles, not to mention the debacle that was the PS3 Orange Box.

Having a mandatory 3.9 GB install should also help improve the game's quality, but apparently it doesn't. Why have mandatory installs if they are not going to help out?
It gets worse for European gamers. While "Atari" is the sole publisher of Ghostbusters in North America, and had a simultaneous launch for the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii, in Europe the game is being published by Sony, and is being offered as a timed exclusive for the PS3. What does that mean? Simple, that Europe will end up getting the inferior version until the 360 and Wii versions are eventually released.

And this of course, brings us to Sony Europe. Did they know about the lower image quality of the PS3 version before release? Did they hit the panic button and dished out a lot of money to be the publisher to obtain that timed exclusive? It's really a shame though, because with all the trouble the Sony is having with the PS3, the PSP, and dare I say the PSP Go, they didn't know this to fall upon their laps.
