Electronic Entertainment Expo Runs This Week

What To Expect From The Show This Year

This years Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, kicks off in Los Angeles this week. And even though there are no new consoles coming out anytime soon, there are big announcements expected from the show.

GiN will be covering the events as they come in, with several special events of our own planned. For starters, as news breaks, we’ll post it in our Industry Happenings section. We will tag all E3 related items with E3 right in the headline for you too. Columns are expected from Hardcore gamer Todd Hargosh, among others. And finally, we’ll have a Gamer Geeks podcast on Friday this week which will wrap up the show. Going beyond the headlines, the Geeks will digest the news and let us know what really matters and what’s just more smoke and mirrors. And in true Geek style, they probably won’t agree on everything (or anything).

Although the show officially runs from Tuesday till Thursday, Microsoft kicked off the festivities with a special Sunday event where they renamed their Natal motion control game technology the Kinect. If Microsoft comes forward with real details during the show, like the cost of the unit, they could be the big winners this year. Expect a lot of game announcements saying titles will support the Kinect real soon.

Not to be outdone, Sony is planning on adding motion controller titles to their lineup, and say it will be better and more accurate than what is currently available on the Wii. Sony says their motion controller technology will cost less than $100, a surprising move from a company whose systems and peripherals tend to be a little more on the expensive side. Also, expect a lot of 3D titles to come onto the PS3 this year, many of which will be revealed at the show.

Nintendo of course already has the top-selling Wii console and the handheld DS and DSi, but wants to go even further into the handheld market with the 3DS. This amazing handheld, if it works as billed, will offer true 3D gaming without the need for those dorky glasses seen almost everywhere else using 3D.
