Hey all, I’m back with a rather recent sequel for this week’s Retro Game Friday. It’s Spelunky 2.
Plot: First off, let me acknowledge that Spelunky 2 released back in 2020 on the Steam platform and for consoles. So not exactly retro but given that I also covered the original Spelunky for this column, which released back in 2008, I figured I’d look at this sequel as well.
The plot of this sequel revolves around Ana Spelunky, the daughter of the previous protagonist Guy Spelunky, exploring the Moon to find her lost parents. Honestly, it’s not that innovative a plot, but it’s not terrible either.
Gameplay: This is once again a 2D platforming roguelike with procedural generation making every run unique, although it definitely has some upgrades like the upgraded liquid physics system which can make your life difficult. Overall, it’s a solid sequel that builds upon the original Spelunky.
Art: The graphics are pretty great, though that’s not surprising given its nature as a 2D game.
Music: The music was pretty great.
Overall: A solid sequel that improves everything just a bit, and it’s a little different from the original Spelunky.
