Michael Blaker’s Retro Game Friday: Raiden II

Hey all, I’m back with a 1993 sequel to a classic arcade game for this week’s Retro Game Friday. It’s Raiden 2.

Plot: The plot of this picks up three years after the original Raiden with the Crystals once more making a comeback, and with the players operating a new fighter craft to combat the threat. So, nothing spectacularly new or interesting.

Really, if you were able to pay attention to the plot while playing this in an arcade (and yes, I realize that it had home releases as well but most of us probably remember the arcade version), then I have to hand it to you for your ability to pay attention with so many numerous distractions occurring all around.

Gameplay: This is once again a 2D bullet hell game. Not much more needs to be said. It expanded the options players had, but it wasn’t particularly new or interesting to be honest.

Art: The graphics are pretty great, though that’s not surprising given its nature as a 2D pixel game.

Music: The music is something I can’t remember because I played it in the arcade.

Overall: A solid if unimaginative sequel.
