Hey all, I’m back with a classic platformer originally released in 1997 for this week’s Retro Game Friday. It’s Croc: Legend of the Gobbos.
Plot: The plot revolves around Croc, an orphaned crocodile who must rescue his adoptive family, the Gobbos, from the evil clutches of Baron Dante. It’s not the most spectacular plot, but it’s not terrible either.
Gameplay: This is a 3D platformer like Mario 64, which Croc’s prototype is rumored to have heavily influenced. To me, it was more along the lines of Banjo-Kazooie with the goal being to rescue the Gobbos, much like you needed to rescue the Jinjos when playing Banjo-Kazooie. And there are also more than a few mechanics that seem heavily influenced by other games like Gex, but it definitely was pretty decent. While I definitely preferred Banjo-Kazooie as a kid, I can’t deny that this series was pretty good.
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos was recently remastered just last year by Titanium Studios and Big Boat Interactive. It’s available on Steam and the screenshots for this column come from that version.
Art: The graphics have aged poorly, which isn’t a surprise given that it was made for the PlayStation back in 1997.
Music: At least for me, the music was not that memorable.
Overall: A pretty decent platformer, although not groundbreaking in any key areas.
For those who like: Platformers, Action, and Adventure.
Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
