Michael Blaker Retro Game Friday Column

Michael Blaker’s Retro Game Friday: Croc 2: Kingdom of the Gobbos

Hey all, I’m back with the sequel to a classic platformer for this week’s Retro Game Friday. It’s Croc 2: Kingdom of the Gobbos. And if you recall, we covered the first game of the Croc series called Croc: Legend of the Gobbos a few months ago. There’s a remastered version of that title available on the Steam platform.

Plot: Croc 2: Kingdom of the Gobbos is a 1999 platformer where Croc sets out to rescue his kidnapped Gobbo friends after the evil Baron Dante and his minions invade Gobbo Valley. Along the way, Croc travels through a variety of themed worlds gathering collectibles, defeating enemies, and using platforming skills to stop Dante’s forces and save the kingdom.

The plot is fine but revolves around Croc once more going around to find more Gobbos just like in Croc: Legend of the Gobbos. This time it’s to get help finding his potentially long lost family. There’s a few more characters, although the gameplay is very similar.

Gameplay: Again, this is a 3D platformer, but it definitely has more of its own spin in that Croc needs to use vehicles occasionally ranging from a go-kart to a snowball of all things. Still, there was nothing really groundbreaking. But overall, Croc 2 offered a much better experience than the first game in the series and smoother gameplay.

Art: The graphics have aged poorly, which isn’t a surprise given that it was made for the PlayStation back in 1999. Better graphics were one of the key selling points of the remastered version of the original Croc game, although there is no Croc 2 remaster planned that we could find.

Overall: Croc 2: Kingdom of the Gobbos was a pretty decent sequel and more fun to play than Croc: Legend of the Gobbos.

For those who like: Platformers, Action, and Adventure.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
