Hey all, I’m back with the sequel to a game I covered recently for this week’s Retro Game Friday. It’s Rick Dangerous 2.
Plot: The plot definitely picks up right after the end of the first Rick Dangerous game, with the alien invasion of earth that it ended with. So, Rick goes on to avenge his lost hat and also to defeat the invaders by mounting a counterattack that leads him on an epic interplanetary journey consisting of five levels.
Again, this is a really old title from 1990, so it only having five levels isn’t too surprising. Unfortunately, Rick Dangerous 2 also ended on a major cliffhanger that was never resolved, so the plot is pretty unsatisfying.
Gameplay: This sequel is a more complex game in terms of gameplay, but it’s still a 2D platformer. Honestly, it’s not that complex compared to games nowadays, but it was a big upgrade comparatively. Still, it was a very punishing one.
Art: The graphics have once again aged alright since it’s a pixel game, but they still have aged.
Music: The music fit Rick Dangerous 2, which is about all you can say for soundtracks back then.
Overall: A solid, if punishing, 2D platformer given when it was first made and released.
