Hey all, I’m back with look at some of my favorite fictional wearables from games for this week’s Video Game Tuesday. It’s all about my favorite fictional gaming tech.
Favorite Fictional Gaming Tech?: I’m talking about items or equipment used in gaming that isn’t power armor or weapons. For example, I’m not talking about a set of MJOLNIR Power Armor. Which by the way would suck to have, I’ll pass on having my body modified just to not die wearing the thing, thank you very much. That also precludes the Gravity Gun and Portal Gun.
Here’s my list in my personal order of desirability from least to most.
The Pip-Boy from Fallout: It’s really just a wearable PDA that includes a radio and other useful things, but nothing we couldn’t have today. It’s basically just a strap-on smartphone on your arm. Do that and you pretty much have a Pip-Boy. Your smartphone won’t likely work as a Geiger counter, but except for that you’re pretty much solid. Still cool, but honestly I’d rather take other wearables if I had the choice.
The F.L.U.D.D. from Mario Sunshine: The full name is The Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device, and it’s essentially a power washer backpack Mario wears that has some form of AI. It’s not particularly great but technically a wearable, and certainly more amazing than a Pip-Boy because it lets Mario hover and jump higher.
The Air Shoes from Sonic: Shadow’s signature shoes allow him to match Sonic’s speed, which is pretty freaking cool all on its own. But it’s the other things that make it one of my favorites. I’d love to be able to wear a set of shoes that let me glide and skate across the ground regardless of how bad the terrain might be, even if I couldn’t go as fast as Sonic. I certainly wouldn’t mind it if that didn’t break my legs or something. Screw having to walk on bumpy sidewalks or slick ice ever again.
The Omni-Tool from Mass Effect: This is a piece of tech that essentially replaces any smartphone and includes a basic matter printer which can create useful things like Medi-Gel or Omni-Gel. I probably would want one more than any other piece on this list, if it weren’t for the final one which takes the prize.
The Focus from Horizon: The Focus is essentially the ultimate augmented reality and smart device. It does everything a smartphone can do, interfaces with any computer system and has crazy amounts of storage and battery life that is utterly freaking ridiculous. Seriously, by the time Aloy first found a Focus, the thing had been laying around in the elements and in the sun for over a thousand years, and it still worked perfectly.
That’s it for this week’s Video Game Tuesday.
