Hey all, I’m back with the second entry in a light novel series that I previously looked at the first volume of for this week’s Translation Necessary Thursday. It’s “Japan Summons: Volume 02” by Minorou.
Plot: In Volume One of “Japan Summons,” all of Japan including its people and landmasses had been summoned into a brand new world. That volume didn’t focus on any one character but instead focused on the country of Japan as a whole. Japan had to figure out its place, economy, diplomacy, and defenses in that much different new world. The first volume included a lot of nationalistic fervor.
The plot of Volume 02 is just a continuation of the past volume really, as it keeps covering the impact to this new world that Japan makes. It does deal with some darker stuff, and Japan doesn’t get off scot-free, but this volume was the one that made me drop the series as a whole. The sheer amount of superiority that was depicted by the author when writing about Japan in the novel was over the top. I’m not saying they should’ve been meek, but it just didn’t seem believable.
Characters: As in volume one, we don’t really get to see many actual characters again, mostly just faceless people fulfilling various roles. There are some named characters, but they feel inconsequential for the most part once again.
Overall: A very disappointing series, although some people may still enjoy it.
