Hey all, I’m back with another classic kids’ film for this week’s Movie Monday. It’s The Mighty Ducks.
Plot: This is a classic sports dramedy from Disney about an arrogant defense attorney who is sentenced to community service in the form of coaching a youth hockey team. Naturally, challenges are overcome, lessons are learned, and the underdog team gets its chance to shine. It’s a pretty formulaic plot from Disney although at the time it didn’t feel quite as formulaic as it might today.
In fact, this movie from 1992 was popular enough that Disney went on to found the real NHL team the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, which later became the Anaheim Ducks. Disney sold the team in 2005, but the connection between the film and the franchise remains one of the more interesting pieces of sports movie history.
Casting: The cast has some standout names, including Joss Ackland and Lane Smith, but the lead role of Gordon Bombay was played by Emilio Estevez. A lot of the younger actors are still best known for this film or the Mighty Ducks franchise, so it became a memorable launching point for many of them.
Cinematography: By today’s standards, it’s not spectacular, but it’s not bad either. The hockey scenes are easy to follow, and the movie does a good job keeping the focus on the team and the personalities of the kids.
Music: The music is fitting and somewhat memorable, though honestly not especially noteworthy. It does what it needs to do for a family sports movie.
Overall: The Mighty Ducks is considered a classic children’s sports film for a reason. It’s funny, easy to watch, and still has a lot of nostalgic charm. If you’ve never given it a watch or have young kids who enjoy hockey (it’s rated PG for mild profanity and hockey violence), this might be worth your time.
For those who like: Comedy, drama, and sports.
Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
