Hey all, I’m back with another Anime Sunday with a series from last year’s Spring season. It’s my “A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof” Episode 01 Impressions.
Plot: This is a rather bizarre series. NinKoro is the abbreviation of the full Japanese title of this series, Ninja to Koroshiya no Futarigurashi. Obviously, there’s a bit more to the plot, but it basically boils down to what it says in the title. It’s more than a tad ridiculous because the main characters are more than a bit macabre.
This first episode deals with the fact that one of the main characters, Satoko, is a failure of a ninja who is really only good at one technique, that of turning non-living objects into leaves. She travels out of her village at the urging of her squad leader which is an automatic death sentence since other loyal ninja now know that she is a deserter. This catches the eye of the other main character, Konoha, who found Satoko. When one of the loyalists finds Satoko, Konoha saves her by murdering the assassian in cold blood. Yeah, this is not a lighthearted series at all, and so stuff happens. It’s honestly a bit more slapstick than I’d prefer, but it’s definitely memorable.
Characters: There are more than just the main characters in this first episode, but the main characters Satoko and Konoha are definitely the highlights here.
Art: The art is great. Given it was done by Shaft, that’s not a surprise. It’s still not up to my gold standard of UFO-table, but it is great nonetheless.
Music: It fits the episode perfectly, and I really can’t say more.
Overall: This is a ridiculous anime. While it is more slapstick than I’d prefer, it’s very memorable.
For those who like: Comedy, drama, and dark humor.
Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
