Mortyr 2093 – 1944 is no Wolfenstein

Back when I got my first modern PC, (my real first computer was a Trash 80) I noticed that installed on it was a simple game entitled Wolfenstein 3D. Created by a small company called id Software, it ended up taking a lot of my free time, as well as becoming one of the greatest games of all time. Maybe it was because it involved traversing through a vast labyrinth from a first person view, or maybe it was because I collect material involving World War II (as my DVD collection of Patton and Saving Private Ryan would prove). Whatever … Continue reading Mortyr 2093 – 1944 is no Wolfenstein

Hold a tiger by the tail in Descent 3

There are some games you play, and there are some games that play you. Descent 3, the latest in 360-degree gaming, is definitely the latter. The first caveat is that if you were made a little queasy by the first titles in this series, don’t even think about playing this one. The second caveat is that if you’ve got the stomach and computer that can handle Descent 3, this may very well be the ride of your life. The Descent universe is based on the conceit of a world of robot ships and the underground bases in which they move … Continue reading Hold a tiger by the tail in Descent 3

Carnivores 2 takes a bite out of hunting simulations

Ok, let me get this out in the open. I’m a closet hunting simulation fan. There, I’ve said it. That out of the way, if anyone thinks this makes me soft, you can find my e-mail at the bottom of the page if you want to challenge me to a game of Half-Life. I know these hunting games are mostly aimed at the non-traditional gamer and perhaps I am a bit of a 3D environment freak, but I have in the past enjoyed stalking virtual mule deer in Texas and bringing home a nice computerized 12-point buck from the woods … Continue reading Carnivores 2 takes a bite out of hunting simulations

Medal of Honor is the Saving Private Ryan” of PlayStation”

War, uhh, good God y’all. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing! Say it again. Well, I can’t say it again because without war, I would not have had the privilege of playing Medal of Honor (MOH), which by the way is about as close as I ever want to get to real warfare. MOH is DreamWorks’ (you know the guys who brought us Saving Private Ryan) first foray into the world of gaming. The same level of realism they brought to that movie is clearly evident throughout MOH. While, not a straight shoot-em-all-up ammo-fest and not a stealth dominated … Continue reading Medal of Honor is the Saving Private Ryan” of PlayStation”

Unreal Tournament blows away the competition

I’ll admit to everyone right now, I wasn’t really a big fan of the original Unreal. Though I liked many of Epic Games’ previous shareware titles (Jazz Jackrabbit, One Must Fall 2097, and Zone 66 to name a few), the long awaited Unreal just didn’t cut it for me. It did feature a gorgeous 3-D engine, and some really impressive music, but I just couldn’t really get into the game mechanics. Even worse, the multiplayer over the Internet was unplayable. Patch after patch came out, but still there was no help, and the original claimed dust in my CD carrying … Continue reading Unreal Tournament blows away the competition

MechWarrior 3 is a blast

When I reviewed MechCommander, the realtime strategy game, about a year ago I begged FASA and Microprose to make a sequel. When MechWarrior 3 came out however, I was a bit wary. I like shooters and I love real time strategy games, but I’ve never really been a fan of trying to control a giant robot from within the cockpit, as MechWarrior 3 challenges players to do. I normally feel too removed from the action, nudging my mech to do my bidding just does not seem as satisfying as picking up an MP40 and doing damage myself. But MechWarrior 3 … Continue reading MechWarrior 3 is a blast

Kingpin is a bite out of crime

"You’re gonna die, mother f*****!" is probably the last thing you will hear in the grimy, crime filled world of Kingpin. (Note: we added the *’s, expect the full language in the game) Kingpin is a lot more than the average johnny-come-lately shooter. It sports amazing textures, a solid plot and some of the best sound support I’ve ever laid ears upon in a shooter. But of course all anyone is talking about is the violence, the blood and the liberal use of the "F word." So let me get that out of the way first. The first thing you … Continue reading Kingpin is a bite out of crime

WWII GI is no breakthrough

WWII GI is a game that I don’t believe ever achieved its full potential. As I played it I must say I enjoyed the experience, but several logic flaws, game errors and overall graphics that are abysmal at best left me with a sense of emptiness. It’s like when you wait for years to see a movie, only to find out that poor acting or bad special effects have ruined the experience. You can’t help but smile, but at the same time you really wish it could have been more. WWII GI attempts to recreate the experience of an actual … Continue reading WWII GI is no breakthrough

Shogo Mobile Armor Division brings anime excitement to PC

Japanese animation has always been an interest of mine, especially those giant robot combat series such as Macross. I was also a big Transformers fan, which I consider the closest the Americans can come to decent anime. I’ve always wanted to be able to play a game that allowed me to control a giant transforming robot just like in the greatest anime. Monolith’s anime shooter Shogo gave me the chance to do so. Shogo centers around Sanjuro Makabe, a Mobile Command Armor (MCA) pilot in the UCA Security Force, involved in a war against a terrorist organization led by a … Continue reading Shogo Mobile Armor Division brings anime excitement to PC
