Hey all, I’m back with look at a concern that could impact gaming for the foreseeable future for this week’s Video Game Tuesday. It’s all about Next Gen Delays.
Next Gen Delays?: As mentioned a couple of Video Game Tuesday posts ago, the chip shortages are causing concerns to the point now that we could see next generation gaming consoles delayed. And as of the time writing this, it’s reportedly caused Sony to push back their intended launch date of the PlayStation 6.
That’s really bad, right?: Yes and no, the current generation already had significant issues thanks to COVID utterly wrecking the supply chain for everyone and causing people to be unable to buy the current generation of consoles for over a year and a half. So, it being delayed isn’t a huge problem for many customers. It’s somewhat of a boon because it’ll encourage games to be made with the current consoles in mind for a few more years than expected, which helps alleviate the supply issue we had with the current generation of consoles where people could not buy them.
On the other hand, it does mean that titles will be confined to the current level of technology, and that can cause cuts in features in order to not overly tax the current hardware. Playing a game that lags isn’t fun for anyone, and most developers try not to ship them in that state.
Thankfully, graphic fidelity won’t be a major issue as we’re pretty much at the point where things can’t realistically get better just by adding more pixels to a screen. At a certain point, it doesn’t matter because it’s as clear as regular vision. That means that games can look amazing as long as they’re properly optimized and work on the current generation of hardware. So, they should continue to look better and better as time goes on.
That’s it for this week’s Video Game Tuesday.
