Welcome readers to another edition of Fresh Look, where the fact that I only seem to play the same games these days means this week’s column is more like the Stale Glance. While this week I will be writing about a commonly mentioned favorite title of mine, it is for a different reason than normal. I have been a huge fan of the roguelite city builder Against the Storm, which earned a perfect 5 GiN Gem review from me. Steam recently alerted me to something regarding that title, and it was quite the surprise.
Developer Eremite Games is launching an Against the Storm board game next year.
The specs about the board game are a little light at the moment, and it is not scheduled to launch until next May. It looks like it might be a resource gathering type of adventure. The site that is hosting the effort, Gamefound (and where you will be able to pledge your support), states that the board game will support up to four players and take between 90 and 120 minutes to play.
The point of the board game, as opposed to the version I reviewed on Steam, seems to be to build supply lines while keeping the residents happy. It’s cool seeing all of the races from the video game (including the DLC) represented in the physical world. At some point, I will buy it and let you all know how it is. So, why am I spending my prime column talking about a board game nearly half a year out?
Well, Code Vein 2’s DLC is half broken so I can’t write about it, and I was trying God Eater on my PC when my cats broke the controller that Save State columnist Vincent Mahoney sent me to use.
That left me with a dearth of things to write about. I have a new controller on the way, and that was last seen in Nanjing, China. There have been two patches for Code Vein 2, and neither of them fixed the PlayStation 5 issue where a cutscene won’t trigger.
So, now I am wondering how a city-building video game will translate into a board game. I am also excited that if you follow the crowdfunding campaign, you get a drainage mole pin. So, check that out.
Make no mistake, I love Against the Storm as a video game. It is my fifth most played title on Steam with 147 hours invested. I may not know how this adventure will translate to the medium of a board game, but I am going to help the crowdfunding campaign because I believe in the companies making it.
Maybe one of these years I can take the Against the Storm board game on a trip with the chief editor and the staff where we sometimes get together to play board games and get away from technology.
And also, hopefully, I will have a Code Vein 2 DLC review or at least some observations about it for you all in my next column.
