Namco reinvents classic favorites

When I saw the cover to Pac-Man and Galaga Dimensions, I was overcome with a sense of disgust. I assumed it was another attempt to polish up another old game to get as much money out of it as possible.

That is where I was wrong.

Namco didn’t cut any corners when creating this game. From the moment I popped the game in, I was hooked. The first little game I played was a new version of Galaga. Galaga Impact is better than some star wars games I played. Taking full advantage of the 3D capabilities of the 3DS, Galaga Impact knocked me off my seat.

Galaga Impact has a unique control scheme. By moving the 3DS around you move the cross hairs around and pick off enemy ships.

The graphics and game play is astounding. For fans of the old Galaga or someone who never even heard of it before, this game is a staple for any 3DS owner.

After I played Galaga Impact I thought that would be the only good game in the pack. Again I was wrong.

Namco revamped Pac-Man into a simple but time-consuming game called Pac-Man Tilt. The gameplay is quite simple: you go from one end of the level to the other tilting the 3DS to get past certain obstacles. There really is nothing more to the game than that. Yet, I wasted a great deal of time playing it.

With average Pac-Man sound effects and audio the game makes a great way to burn time if your waiting (for example when your sitting in a waiting room for two hours).

In addition to these two high powered games, Namco included four old favorites. Pac-Man and Pac-Man Championship edition got a nice 3D and graphic overhaul and further adds to the entertainment value of the game.

To put the final touches on an already high caliber game pack, they added the original Galaga and Galaga Legions. This stellar lineup combines to form the ultimate portable arcade title.

The only real complaint I have is that all the games (minus Galaga Impact and Pac-Man Tilt) do not fill the entire screen.

While the 3D Arcade like background is fascinating, the game is so small it is a severe strain on the eyes and makes it difficult to play.

I’m glad to see Namco reinvent the classics and add a 3D twist to it. This title is great for both competing with friends and keeping yourself occupied for a long time. I give Pac-Man & Galaga Dimensions 4 out of 5 GiN Gems.
