Hi everyone, I’m finally back after some technical difficulties with another book review of the Ghost Hunter Mystery series. It’s Ghouls, Ghouls, Ghouls, Book 05 of the Ghost Hunter Mystery Series, by Victoria Laurie!

Plot Synopsis: When M.J. Holliday and the crew of her cable TV show, Ghoul Getters, venture to the haunted ruins of Dunlow Castle in Ireland, drawn by the legend of hidden treasure, they hope the road will rise up to meet them, that the wind will always be at their backs-and that the resident phantom won’t push them off a cliff.

Ghouls3INSIDEPlot: I’m not sure if I’ve been reading better written books recently or what, but after coming back to this series after such a long break I’m finding it really hard to deal with the plot of this story. Characters make incredibly stupid choices for no real reason in this book way too often for me to suspend disbelief even a little. “I need to get off this haunted island that I just demanded we stay on only five minutes ago” is a brief and accurate summary of one such scene. I’m hoping that this is a fluke in the author’s writing and not something that will become the norm, as these last two entries in the series have really stretched my suspension of disbelief.

Characters: We don’t get to see my personal favorite character Steven in this book as apparently, and completely off camera, M. J. decided to dump him at the end of the last book. Heath isn’t a bad character, but I really wish that he would kindly give M.J. a good head slap for the stunts she pulls in this book. I was actually more annoyed at her in this book than I enjoyed her character, which isn’t a good sign for keeping my attention and favor. As for newcomers, we don’t really have any this time around except for some locals who really don’t make that much of a difference.

Overall: This entry was a clear loser, in terms of plot and character development. Hopefully after this book it will get better. Otherwise I’m probably going to stop listening to the series.
