Welcome Time Wasters!

I had a bit of a full week and unfortunately didn’t have much free time at my computer. So like any modern gamer, I turned to my phone whenever I could to get my gaming fix. This week I played a fun little mobile game called Bike Race. I’ve actually been playing this game for a couple months now in my free time, and felt now was as good a time as ever to give it a review.

Bike Race is a racing physics game. You control a motorcyclist by tilting your mobile device and race through a variety of different levels to reach the finish line. The faster you get to the finish line, the more stars you get. Three stars can be earned on each level and stars are used to unlock more levels to race in. This adds a nice amount of replay value to the game as you’ll keep trying to get faster times to unlock more levels. There is another version of the game that costs a dollar and has all the levels unlocked, but I prefer the free version because I get more play out of it and I enjoy the additional challenge of having to unlock levels myself.

You can also unlock more bikes to race with. Some have special abilities like higher jumping, but for the most part the bikes are all the same. There are a couple of bikes that are pay to own and give you a huge advantage, but I found myself not using them because it felt cheap, especially in multiplayer.

Speaking of multiplayer I guess I should mention that Bike Race has it, and it’s good. The game is set up so that you can record a ghost for other players to race against, and then in turn race against the other players’ ghost. It’s a simple enough system, but I found it to be really fun. It also helps that Bike Race has a very active community. Lately I’ve been checking my phone three or four times a day to do more multiplayer races. Also it doesn’t take much time either. A race against another player takes anywhere from five to 30 seconds, which makes it a perfect thing to do in short bursts.

My only real complaint is the ability to use pay to own bikes in multiplayer. Some of the bikes are indestructible and results in players just face rolling their way to victory. It can be really frustrating and I usually cancel my games with anyone who uses the really cheap bikes like that.

The graphics are alright and some of the extra bikes look cool enough to keep me interested. As for the sound, it’s generic. I’ve actually shut off all of the audio on Bike Race because listening to a revving engine isn’t really all that grand and it keeps people from looking over my shoulder to see what I’m doing (it’s a pet-peeve of mine).

Overall I have a lot of fun with Bike Race and recommend it to anyone with an Android device. It’s a great time waster despite the few unfair bikes and overall boring audio.
