This week on Anime Sunday I’m covering my favorite Gundam Universal Century series. It’s Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam!

Plot Synopsis: Set in the year Universal Century (UC) 0087, eight years after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam (0079). The story of Zeta Gundam is told through the viewpoint of Kamille Bidan, a civilian teenager and amateur mobile suit pilot whose parents are engineers working for the Earth Federation and the Titans. While traveling to the Green Noa colony to meet his parents, Kamille is insulted by and strikes a Titans officer named Jerid Messa.

Plot: First off this isn’t your kid’s Gundam show, the plot in this series is incredibly serious and rarely takes time to have comedic interludes. The plot is quite good, and while it does establish many of the tropes used in later series, at the time it wasn’t cliched at all.

Characters: Kamille is a much more likable main character than Amuro ever was, and it helps that his mentor Quattro is quite the bad ass. I enjoy pretty much all the characters that are introduced in this show, and expect a few old friendly faces from the original series to pop up from time to time.

Artwork: The artwork in this series is leagues better than the original series, which while it stands up to the test of time still shows wear. Zeta on the other hand looks absolutely amazing even now almost 30 years later.

Music: The music is also amazing, and the openings aren’t nearly as cheesy as the original series was.

Overall: If you can slog through the original series, you need to watch this series because it’s probably one of the best Anime series of all time.

For those who like: Gundam Series, Science Fiction, Great Plots, Amazing Artwork, Fantastic Music, Terrific Cast of Characters.

Not for those who don’t like: Any of the above.
