Todd Hargosh, Testing Director

Todd's columns have appeared in many publications such as GamePro, Electronic Gaming Monthly, PC Gamer, and Electronic Games. Todd is a founding member of GiN and speaks from an "old school" gamer's perspective. Embracing the notions of all classic gaming, game soundtracks, and the original "hardcore style," he also shuns the trends he feels are ruining the game industry, such as the embracement of 3D, the over-saturation of MMOs, and misleading game advertising.

Got The 56K Blues

Ok, we all are now aware that the official launch of XBox Live will be taking place on November 15th, and I am anxious to get the opportunity to enjoy online console gaming that I have not experienced since Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast. But we know where that sad story went, thanks to Whore and Blowhard. Since then I have been unable to do any online gaming. Even with my blazing fast Athlon XP2000 computer and a new library of hot titles (Warcraft 3 and Wolfenstein to name a few), I still am no match for any true … Continue reading Got The 56K Blues

Sports Bore

As a sports fan, I hate this time of year. I mean, the summer is absolutely boring for anyone who likes sports. Even my watching baseball is starting to wane away. On my return trip from Wednesday night's 4-1 Pirate victory against the Colorado Rockies, I heard on the news that the possible strike date is not September 16th, as I originally thought. It is now slated for AUGUST 16th. What this means is that if this strike goes all the way up to, and possibly canceling, the World Series, then last night's game will be the last game I … Continue reading Sports Bore

It’s Not My Fault

NO HOLIDAY FOR ME! So I missed a commentary, so what? I never thought that it would result in a tirade, and my good name being attacked by my own editor, for crying out loud! I guess I'll have to explain my entire story to Breeden to make sure he knew what I was going through. To start off, considering it was the 4th of July holiday, I decided that I wanted to spend it back in my hometown, away from all the noise and potential terror attacks that would plague DC. (Go figure the only attack was that gun-toting … Continue reading It’s Not My Fault

Warcraft III Reigns Supreme

How long has it been since Blizzard released a quality RTS game? About 4 years, if I remember correctly. I have always mentioned how Blizzard seems to take forever to get their titles out on the market. However, unlike other developers who take forever to make a title that ends up being bad (Battlecruiser 3000AD, anyone), whatever Blizzard releases ends up pure gold. Remember how long it took for Starcraft to come out? But also remember how the final product was so memorable, so engrossing, and just so deep that it is still enjoyed to this day (especially in Korea … Continue reading Warcraft III Reigns Supreme

EA Awards Us Another Medal of Honor

Finally I have found a PlayStation 2 shooter that dethrones the mighty Red Faction (at least until Red Faction 2 comes out). In fact, I have had interest in playing Frontline ever since I found out that the D-Day invasion made prevalent in Saving Private Ryan and in the previous MOH title Allied Assault for the PC, would be included. Otherwise I thought it would be another title similar to the PS1 MOH games which I admittedly was not impressed with. This time I am. Not only is the D-Day invasion in the game, it is the first mission. Like … Continue reading EA Awards Us Another Medal of Honor

Victory!

Victory is mine! On my last commentary, I was pictured with the caption stating "It's hell inside." Nothing could be more truthful after the ordeal that I got myself into over the weekend. It all started last week when my new barebones computer arrived: a brand new Athlon XP 2000+ with 256 MB of PC 2100 DDR memory and a Gigabyte 7DX motherboard. I ordered it from the same company (Infinity Solutions Plus) because I have a good history with them, and the last computer I ordered from them worked almost flawlessly. After getting the case opened I noticed the … Continue reading Victory!

Back To The PC

Warcraft III, Elite Force II, Freelancer, and of course, DOOM III have tempted me back. Now more than ever it is time for me to return to the realm of PC gaming, a foray I recently have departed from because upgrades were becoming very costly. But as I look back at the PC I own (or should I say, owned after the power supply was fried), I realized that two years is long enough to wait before making a significant upgrade. For a while, having an AMD Athlon 700 PC powered by a Voodoo 3 board and 128 MB of … Continue reading Back To The PC

Day Three – Don’t Slow Down

Seventy-two hours have passed since I arrived here in LA, and for this year’s E3 I have done more than ever before. More games, more previews, more free junk to give out, more women, my first ever XBox party (don’t get excited, it was just ok), and all done on a cheap budget (I had almost NO money until yesterday). This year’s E3 definitely was an improvement over last year, but mainly because there was no hype about new systems debuting (almost at the same level of hype that Attack of the Clones had compared to Phantom Menace). The new … Continue reading Day Three – Don’t Slow Down

Day Two – Party Rolls On

Everyone talks about the big hangover received after attending a major E3 party. However, for someone who doesn’t drink like I do (well, alcohol at least), it was not hard for me to be hung over from the party, but when you consider I only had 4 hours of sleep the night before because we found our hotel so late, and spending the next 16 hours on exhibits and parties, not even a case of Bawls (heavily caffeinated soda water) would help me overcome Day 1. Fortunately I was able to get a decent night’s sleep in preparation for Day … Continue reading Day Two – Party Rolls On

Midnight, Day 1

I am writing this report of Day 1 at exactly 12 midnight, exactly 15 hours after seeing the first exhibit on my E3 schedule. Why so late you may ask? It was because I attended my first ever Microsoft XBox party. I will admit though it was a little below expectations. While getting out for a couple hours after the expo was a nice diversion, and it was a nice way for me to play the latest XBox titles without a massive crowd, the rest of the setting was very crammed, the music was extremely loud (I could hear it … Continue reading Midnight, Day 1
